Before the first meeting

What owners ask us first

Short answers. The first meeting is for the long ones.

Who do you work for?

Owners of privately held companies in and around Austin, usually with fewer than fifty people: founders, buyers, partners and families. We don’t represent employees against their employer, or anyone in a divorce.

What happens at the first meeting?

An hour with the lawyer who would do the work, at the office or by video. You tell us what’s changing; we tell you what we’d do, who would do it and what it would cost.

How do you charge?

Flat fees for forming a company and for outside counsel, hourly for purchases, sales and disputes. Every engagement starts with a letter that states the fee or the estimate.

Do you go to court?

When a dispute between owners or with a customer can’t be settled, yes, in the Travis County courts, the federal court in Austin or the Texas Business Court. Most of our work is meant to keep companies out of court.

Can you work with my accountant?

We’d rather. Entity choice, purchases and succession all turn on tax, and we plan them with your accountant in the room.

Do you work outside Austin?

Yes, for companies anywhere in Texas. When a deal reaches another state, we bring in a lawyer admitted there.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

Whatever you have: the company agreement, the contract in question, the letter of intent, the last year’s tax return. If you have nothing written down, that’s a good reason to come.

Is what I tell you confidential?

What you tell us when you ask for advice is protected, even before you hire us. Please don’t send confidential details through the contact form; tell us in the meeting.
